Pick up a handful of dirt in a Pontiac backyard and most of it will run through your fingers. This end of Richland County sits on the edge of the Sandhills, and that pale, gritty sand is what we pull out of entryway carpet in Woodcreek Farms, Catawba Hill and Jacobs Creek week after week.
Pontiac started as a railroad stop on Two Notch Rd and got its post office in 1915. Most of what you see now is a lot newer. The subdivisions strung along Spears Creek Church Rd between Two Notch and I-20 exit 82, and out toward Earth Rd and Clemson Rd, filled in over the last twenty-five years or so. Mail still says Elgin 29045, even where the city has annexed a street.
Sand is hard on new carpet
Sand cuts carpet. The grains settle low in the pile, and every footstep rubs those sharp edges back and forth across the yarn where it's tufted in. Over a couple of years the carpet just inside the garage door and at the foot of the stairs starts to look flat and fuzzy, even though it never looked dirty.
Builder-grade carpet, which is what most new construction out here came with, has less fiber to lose. Our opinion: get the first professional cleaning done in year one or two, before the traffic areas mat down for good. Waiting until it looks bad means waiting until the damage is done.
What we can't do is stop the sand from coming back. Regular vacuuming with a strong beater bar does more for sandy carpet than anything we bring, and a good mat at the garage door helps too. What a cleaning adds is the deep pull. The technician goes over the house with you and settles the price first, pre-treats the lanes, then cleans with a carbonated solution that lifts the grit and the oily film holding it in place so the machine can draw both out. Very little water goes into the carpet, so it dries fast.
Not every house out here is new
Briarcliffe Estates went up between the late '70s and mid '80s, some of it on Lake Briarcliffe, and Plantation Pointe has the big trees that only come with time. Those homes are more likely to need pet odor work on an old spot or a refresh of carpet that's been down for decades.
Peach Grove Villas, the gated 55+ patio homes on Earth Rd, is a different job again: one-level layouts, often with a guest room that barely gets walked on and a living room that gets walked on all day.
Newer kitchens and baths around Pontiac usually have tile, and the grout in a mudroom by the garage picks up that same sand. Our tile and grout service runs a buffing machine over the floor to work the grit out of the lines. Engineered and prefinished wood is common too, and our hardwood cleaning is a pH-neutral clean that's safe on both.
